River had consumed more Bacardi than was good for anyone intending to remain upright when a hitchhiking youth appeared on the horizon. He reached the Elizabeth Fang Playhouse and dropped his backpack near the surviving sign that perpetually promoted opening night of A Doll’s House.

She watched him through a hole in the waist-high wall as he lit a cigarette. He had long brown hair, a cleft chin, dark glasses, and what looked like a chip on his shoulder.

His voice was gruff when he called the loitering Working Boy over. The animal lifted its head to peer over the wall. It snorted once, and then lowered its head back to the grass. “Screw you, too,” the boy said. “I hate quadrupeds.”

River considered rising to the animal’s defence, but decided she preferred spying to confrontation. She watched the boy puff away on his cigarette for a while and had to stifle the giggles when he seemed to be arguing with himself under his breath. Then he made a worse mistake than telling off a horse: he set the skeletal remains of a vine on fire with his cigarette.

“Hey!” River jumped to her feet. The wall spun, so she held on tight to keep it in place. “Show some respect.”

“The plant’s dead, chick.” If the boy was surprised to see an übercute girl pop up from behind the wall, he did an admirable job of concealing it.

“So’s my mother.” Her toe swiped an x in the dirt to mark the spot. “She burnt to a crisp right here.”

“Mothers die.”

“What would you know about it?”

He shrugged.

Keeping her body pressed against the stone for balance, River made her way around the wall. When she reached him, she momentarily forgot the boy as the long blond hair of a guitar-wielding rock star decalled on his T-shirt grabbed her attention. Forget her fiancé, she wanted to run away with the blond musician. She wanted to ride in his tour bus, and blow him kisses from the wings while he sang for thousands. She wanted to have his babies.

“You’re a hunk,” she informed the decal.

The youth in the shirt snorted. He also lifted his backpack.

“Wait,” River begged. Her gaze rose to the youth’s face. Some thing about him looked vaguely familiar, but she lacked the energy to figure out the mystery.

“Why?”

“I need to talk to someone other than these assholes.” With a finger, she seemed to conduct an orchestra made up of a stand of birch, the base of the Yukon River, and the village of Everlasting.

“I would, but there’s nothing in it for me.”

“Maybe there is. First we talk …” The words brazen hussy troubled her thoughts as she stroked the plastic hair of the blond musician, then reached for the waistband of the boy’s jeans.
